Highlights of CRAS 2025

The 14th edition of the Conference on New Technologies for Computer/Robot Assisted Surgery (CRAS 2025) took place from September 10–12, 2025, at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, bringing together leading researchers, clinicians, and innovators in the field of surgical robotics.

This year’s conference was proudly sponsored by ACMIT reaffirming its commitment to advancing cutting-edge technologies in computer- and robot-assisted surgery. ACMIT also sponsored the conference awards, further highlighting its dedication to recognizing excellence and innovation in the field.

Among the presenters of the awards was Dr. Gernot Kronreif, Chief Scientific Officer at ACMIT.

Additionally, Dr. Kronreif served as a Chair for the keynote lecture delivered by Prof. Dr. Arianna Menciassi, a long-term supporter and partner of ACMIT. Prof. Menciassi is a Full Professor of the Biomedical Robotics at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy, a Team Leader of the “Surgical Robotics & Allied Technologies” Area at the BioRobotics Institute, furthermore the Coordinator of the PhD in Biorobotics and was appointed as Vice-Rector of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.

The awards ceremony recognized outstanding contributions in several categories:

Best Paper Awards  

1st place: “OSCAR: An Ovipositor-Inspired Capsule Robot for Colonoscopy – A Proof of Concept” by Mostafa A. Atalla, Anand Sekar, Remi van Starkenburg, David Jager, Aimee Sakes and Paul Breedveld

2nd place: “Speech-Based Predictors of Nontechnical Skills Performance in Cardiac Surgery” by Sanjana Mendu, Shrivatsa Mishra, Roger Daglius Dias, Theodora Chaspari and Marco A. Zenati

3rd place: “OriWrist: A Hybrid Parallel-Continuum Origami-Inspired Manipulator for Robotic Surgery”, by Lorenzo Mocellin, Théo Dangel, Zixi Chen, Cesare Stefanini and Arianna Menciassi

Best Poster Awards

1st place: “Vine-Inspired Robots for Navigation in the Spinal Subarachnoid Space: A Pilot Human Tissue Study” by Zicong Wu, S.M.Hadi Sadati, Panagiotis Vartholomeos, Mohamed Abdelaziz, Burak Temelkuran, Thomas Booth, Jonathan Shapey, Aminul Ahmed and Christos Bergeles

2nd place: “SUGAR: A Computer Vision Approach to Suture Quality Assessment” by Laura Manso and Gerard Lacey

3rd place: “Anatomically Relevant Frame Selection for Laryngeal Cancer Computer-Assisted Diagnosis and Intervention” by Gaia Di Filippo, Mariachiara Di Cosmo, Daniela De Luca, Leonardo Mattos and Sara Moccia
